MavTints — how a clear coating becomes a color
MavTints universal pigment packs in 7 stocked colors at 16 oz, 100% solids and zero VOC, mixed into MavCoat and MavSeal products at defined load ratios. The tint pack is not the coating — confusing the two is a costly mistake.
- State the stocked colors, the pack size, and the load ratios by family
- Know which products never receive MavTints
- Handle a custom color request and a cold pack correctly
The pigment is a component, not an accessory
MavTints are Maverick's universal pigment packs, sold in 7 stocked colors — Light Gray, Haze Gray, Deck Gray, Black, Sandstone, White, and Tile Red — at 16 oz per pack, 100% solids and zero VOC. They mix into MavCoat and MavSeal products at defined per-family load ratios. Because pigment paste is not part of the crosslink chemistry, the ratio is a specification, not a preference: overloading dilutes the reactive stoichiometry and the film cures softer, slower, and less chemical resistant.
Load ratios — from the MavTints PDS
| What you are tinting | Ratio |
|---|---|
| MavSeal HWU | 1 pint per 1 gallon |
| Polyaspartic (such as MavSeal UPA) | 1 pint per 2 gallons |
| 100% solids epoxy, 3-gallon kit | 1 pint per 3 gallons — White and Sandstone may take 2 pints for full hide |
| MavCrete urethane cement | None. MavCrete is pigmented through the cementitious powder blend, not with a MavTints pack. |
Say it out loud, then check yourself
- 01Give the load ratios for HWU, polyaspartic, and a 3-gallon epoxy kit.
MavSeal HWU: 1 pint per 1 gallon. Polyaspartic: 1 pint per 2 gallons. 100% solids epoxy, 3-gallon kit: 1 pint per 3 gallons — White and Sandstone may take 2 pints where hide is critical.
- 02What is the risk of exceeding the recommended tint load in a polyaspartic?
It softens the cured film. Pigment paste is not part of the crosslink chemistry, so overloading dilutes the reactive stoichiometry — the film cures softer, less chemical-resistant, and slower. In extreme overloads it will not fully harden. Hold at 1 pint per 2 gallons.
- 03A pack pulled off a cold truck looks solid at 40°F. Ruined?
Not ruined. The PDS states that cold material appearing solid may liquify once the contents come to room temperature. Warm the pack in a heated van or shop before opening, and do not dilute it. If it still looks solid after warming, then reject the pack.
- 04Customer supplies a RAL chip that is not on the standard chart.
Match to the closest stocked MavTints color. If an exact match is required, order a custom MavTints color through the Maverick color lab. You do not refuse the job, and you do not source pigment from a third party.
Takeaways
- MavCoat and MavSeal ship clear. MavTints is how they get color, at the mix station.
- Load ratios: HWU 1 pint per gallon; polyaspartic 1 pint per 2 gallons; 100% solids epoxy 1 pint per 3 gallons.
- MavCrete is not tinted with MavTints — its color comes through the cementitious powder blend.
