MavCoat — the epoxy coating line

MavCoat is Maverick's epoxy-based coating line — primers, self-leveling body coats, chemical-resistant and high-performance coats, waterborne, novolac, metallic, flexible bridge, and the specialty ESD / MVB / OPE finishes. Learn where these sit in a Maverick floor, and which product may finish a floor and which may never.

  • Name the role each MavCoat serves — and the one that can never be the last coat
  • Separate the chemical-resistance picks from the mechanical-duty picks
  • Know the coverage figures, the moisture limits, and which product handles a slab that is over them

Maverick Resinous Chemistry Training

Maverick Resinous Chemistry Training · 20 min

Watch this first. How resinous chemistry actually works, and where each Maverick line fits in a floor.

Where MavCoat actually sits

MavCoat is Maverick's epoxy-based coating line. That is the whole definition — epoxy coatings. It is not the Maverick system, and it does not cover every role in a floor. On roughly 99% of Maverick projects the floor itself is built from one of the two main system lines: MavClad, the epoxy mortar system, or MavCrete, the urethane cement systems family. Those go down first and carry the floor. Coatings go over them, and MavSeal — the urethane sealer and topcoat line — finishes the job. Learn the order before the products: MavClad or MavCrete builds the floor, MavCoat is the epoxy coating over it, MavSeal is the urethane sealer on top. Within the MavCoat line your job is then to know which role each product is allowed to serve. A product used outside its role does not fail slowly; it fails as a warranty call. Every MavCoat ships clear from the factory, and pigment is added on site with MavTints at the load ratio that family requires.

The MavCoat roles — know these cold

ProductRole it servesThe line that matters
MavCoat SLE100% solids self-leveling epoxy primer / body coatHides minor imperfections and takes a broadcast into the wet film. Under heavy forklift traffic it MUST be topcoated with a MavSeal aliphatic — alone it chalks and abrades.
MavCoat FCBroadcast body coat (hybrid polyurea-epoxy)Engineered to receive flake or quartz into the wet film. Never the last coat — the surface is designed to be embedded, not exposed.
MavCoat HPEFour roles, in the sheet's own words: primer, pigmented topcoat, clear topcoat over coatings, clear topcoat over flake systemsA two-component 100% solids high-gloss epoxy that is hard, durable and chemical resistant. 16 wet mils = 100 sq ft/gal per coat; as primer 175–250 sq ft/gal. Not UV-stable without a topcoat; not for exterior use or constant immersion.
MavCoat CREChemical-resistant epoxyFood and beverage, chemical processing, labs, secondary containment, USDA-appropriate facilities. Chemistry drives the spec, not wheel loads.
MavCoat NVNovolac chemical-resistant topcoatAcid resistance a standard bisphenol-A epoxy cannot survive: secondary containment, plating lines, acid wash bays, concentrated caustic.
MavCoat OPEBasecoat or topcoat with built-in slip textureCures to an inherent orange-peel texture, DCOF wet ≥ 0.42 — slip resistance in either role with no broadcast aggregate.
MavCoat WBEWater-based epoxy — 25 g/L VOC, low odorSchools, hospitals, cafeterias, occupied recoats where solvent load is the driver. NOT for heavy chemical or acid service — that is CRE.
MavCoat MetallicDecorative self-leveling epoxyApplied over a tinted basecoat on sealed concrete, then sealed with a MavSeal. Not stand-alone, not for outdoor UV.
MavCoat FlexFlexible bridge coat — 60% elongationWood substrates and crack-bridging over primed concrete. Per the PDS, not designed as a stand-alone product — it must be over-coated.
MavCoat ESDElectrostatic-dissipative coatingConductive fillers move static charge off the floor. Electronics manufacturing, munitions rooms, clean rooms.
MavCoat MVBMoisture vapor barrier primerResists MVT up to 25 lb / 1,000 SF / 24 hr (ASTM F1869) or 95% RH (ASTM F2170) at a full 16 mils. Goes down when the slab is over the coating system's own moisture limit. NOT a stand-alone product — it must be over-coated with a more durable Maverick system.
MavPrime MVTMoisture-tolerant primer for green concreteGoes down on concrete that is still green. One 8–10 mil coat up to 85% RH, two full coats above 85%. It is NOT a vapor barrier — the sheet says do not apply to a slab on grade unless a heavy, unruptured vapor barrier is already under the slab. That job is MavCoat MVB's.

ItemWhat the sheet says
Kits3-gallon kit = 2 gal Part A : 1 gal Part B. 15-gallon kit = 10 gal Part A : 5 gal Part B. Mix ratio 2A:1B by volume.
TintingOne MavTints pack per 3 mixed gallons. Two packs per 3 gallons for White, Light Gray and Safety Yellow, for hiding.
MixingPre-mix Part A. Pour Part B into the Part A pail and mix at least two minutes with a low-speed Jiffy-type blade, scraping the sides — unmixed material left on the pail wall will not cure.
ApplyingRoller, or squeegee and back-roll. Empty the pail onto the floor as fast as possible for maximum working time. Do not over-roll: excess rolling introduces air bubbles.
Cure at 77°FTack free about 10 hours (at 70°F) · foot traffic 12–24 hr · light service 24 hr · full service 48–72 hr.
RecoatWithin 24 hours at 70°F. Miss the window and the coating must be sanded before recoating.
Surface prepCSP 3–CSP 5 per ICRI 310.2R. New concrete cured 28 days minimum. Minimum surface tensile strength 300 psi per ASTM D4541.
MoistureMVT 3 lb or less per 1,000 sq ft in 24 hr (ASTM F1869) and in-situ RH below 75% (ASTM F2170). For green concrete, prime with MavPrime MVT.
OutgassingApply primer and coating while the substrate temperature is dropping — typically evening, checked with a surface thermometer. Double priming greatly reduces it.
LimitationsNot 100% color stable without a UV-stable topcoat. Not for exterior use or constant immersion. Confirm performance in the specific chemical environment before use.
Shelf life12 months from manufacture, unopened, indoors at 65–80°F, dry.

MavCoat MVB — straight off the 10/12/2026 sheet

ItemWhat the sheet says
What it isA 100% solids two-component epoxy primer for concrete with moisture vapor transmission problems. Applied straight to the concrete to reduce adhesion loss and blistering from MVT.
The barrier claimA full 16 mils (15.3 mils for Fast) resists MVT up to 25 lb / 1,000 sq ft / 24 hr (ASTM F1869) or 95% RH (ASTM F2170). Under the full thickness you do not have the barrier.
Two cure speedsStandard and Fast. They are different Part-Bs — do not mix them up.
Kits and ratioPart-A 2 gal + Standard Part-B 1 gal = a 3-gallon kit at 2:1 by volume. Part-A 2 gal + Fast Part-B 0.86 gal = a 2.86-gallon kit at 2.33:1. Never split a kit.
CoverageNominal 16 mils = 100 sq ft per gallon. A 3-gallon Standard kit covers 300 sq ft; a 2.86-gallon Fast kit also covers 300 sq ft, at 15.3 mils.
TintingUp to 2 pints of MavTints per 3-gallon kit — 1 pint per 1.5 mixed gallons. Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black, Tile Red.
Cure at 72°F / 50% RH — StandardWork time 25–30 min · tack free 9 hr · light foot traffic 24 hr · full cure 5 days.
Cure at 72°F / 50% RH — FastWork time 15–20 min · tack free 6 hr · light foot traffic 6 hr · full cure 5 days.
Recoat windowMinimum 5 hr Standard / 3 hr Fast. Maximum 24 hr for both — miss it and the system has to be sanded before recoating.
TemperatureAir, surface and material all 60–85°F, and the floor at least 5°F above dew point. With the Fast Part-B it can go down to 50°F.
Surface prepDiamond grind or shotblast to CSP 3 or greater (SSPC-SP13 / NACE 6, ICRI 310.2). Previously coated floors get 30-grit metal diamonds to strip any non-epoxy grout or topcoat. Concrete minimum 3,500 psi compressive and 300 psi tensile.
LimitationsNot a stand-alone product — it must be over-coated. It will NOT prevent failures from Alkali-Silica Reaction or from contaminants left by old hardeners and sealers.
Shelf life12 months unopened, indoors, 60–85°F, humidity under 65%. Do not let it freeze.

MavPrime MVT — straight off the 10/01/2026 sheet

ItemWhat the sheet says
What it isA two-component, 100% solids, high-performance epoxy coating / primer that is moisture tolerant and able to be applied to GREEN CONCRETE. Zero VOC. Use it as a primer under another flooring system, or as a standalone coating.
The rule that mattersMeasure concrete RH before you apply. Up to 85% RH, one 8–10 mil coat is enough. Above 85% RH, apply TWO full 8–10 mil coats. On a two-coat job run two different colors — or a clear first coat and a pigmented second — so you can see you got complete coverage.
Kits and ratio3-gallon kit = 2 gal A : 1 gal B. 15-gallon = 10 : 5. 150-gallon = 100 : 50. Mix ratio 2A:1B by volume. Pot life 25 minutes at 77°F, and heat shortens it.
Coverage8–10 wet mils per coat; 200 sq ft per gallon per coat at 8 mils. In kits: a 3-gallon kit covers 600 sq ft in ONE coat, or 300 sq ft at the typical two-coat 16-mil build. The CPQ catalog quotes 300 sq ft per 3-gallon kit because two coats is the typical build — but one coat only covers you up to 85% RH, so take the reading before you trust a takeoff either way.
TintingOne MavTints pack per 3 mixed gallons. Two packs per 3 gallons for white, light and safety colors. Tint into Part A before you add Part B.
MixingPre-mix Part A. Pour Part B in and mix at least two minutes on a low-speed Jiffy blade, scraping the pail wall — unmixed material left on the side will not cure. Empty the pail onto the floor fast; material left in the pail heats up and loses pot life.
Cure at 77°FTack free about 10 hours (at 70°F) · foot traffic 12–24 hr · light service 24 hr · full service 48–72 hr.
Recoat windowMinimum: when it is tack free. Maximum: 24 hours. Miss the window and the coating has to be sanded before recoating.
TemperatureAir 50–95°F. Surface at least 5°F above the dew point. Storage 65–80°F.
Surface prepClean, sound concrete, free of coatings, sealers, curing compounds, oils and grease. Remove laitance and weak layers. Mechanically prepare to CSP 3–CSP 5 per ICRI 310.2R (60-grit or coarser). Minimum surface tensile strength 300 psi per ASTM D4541.
OutgassingApply while the substrate temperature is DROPPING — typically evening, checked with a surface thermometer. Double priming greatly reduces it.
StrengthCompressive 7,000 psi (ASTM C579) · tensile 1,500 psi (D638) · flexural 3,500 psi (C580) · Shore D 80–85 · bond 425 psi (D4541) · abrasion 80 mg (D4060).
LimitationsNot for exterior use or constant immersion. Confirm performance in the specific chemical environment first. DO NOT apply to a slab on grade unless a heavy, unruptured vapor barrier has been installed under the slab. Do not let it freeze.
Clean upToluene, acetone or xylene, immediately after use. Never alcohol.
Shelf life12 months from manufacture, unopened, indoors at 65–80°F, dry.

  1. 01
Name the four roles MavCoat HPE can serve.

Straight off the sheet: primer, pigmented topcoat, clear topcoat over coatings, and clear topcoat over flake systems. One product, four roles.

  2. 02
When do you spec NV over SLE?

When the environment carries aggressive chemical exposure. NV is a novolac chemical-resistant topcoat built for acid service a standard epoxy cannot survive — secondary containment, plating lines, acid wash bays, concentrated caustic areas.

  3. 03
Three environments where NV beats SLE.

Secondary containment with acid exposure such as HCl or sulfuric; plating line splash zones; battery or caustic wash bays.

  4. 04
Why can MavCoat FC never be the topcoat?

Its surface is engineered to be embedded with broadcast media, not to serve as the exposed wear surface. As a last coat it behaves like an unfinished body coat — it dulls, chalks, and abrades under traffic, and it comes back as a warranty call.

  5. 05
CRE or HPE — how do you decide?

CRE is the chemical-resistant epoxy: food and beverage, chemical processing, labs, secondary containment. HPE is the general-purpose high-performance epoxy — hard, durable, chemical resistant, four roles. Where chemistry is the driver the HPE sheet tells you to confirm product performance in that specific chemical environment before use, so aggressive chemical service routes to CRE.

  6. 06
Why is MavCoat Flex never a stand-alone floor?

Flex is a flexible bridge epoxy at 60% elongation — it delivers crack-bridging and wood-substrate flex, not the compressive, abrasion, and chemical duty a service floor needs. The PDS states it is not designed to be used as a stand-alone product.

  7. 07
What makes MavCoat ESD different, and where does it go?

It is formulated with conductive fillers that move static-electric charge away from the floor surface. Spec it where ESD-sensitive equipment or explosive-atmosphere risk is present — electronics manufacturing, munitions rooms, clean rooms.

  8. 08
Coverage math — a 15-gal kit of 100% solids HPE at 15 mils DFT.

Coverage ft² per gal = 1604 ÷ mils. 1604 ÷ 15 = 106.9 ft² per gallon. Across a 15-gallon kit: 106.9 × 15 ≈ 1,604 ft² per kit, before any waste factor. The sheet's own published figure is 16 wet mils = 100 sq ft per gallon per coat, and 175–250 sq ft per gallon when HPE is used as the primer.

  • Not this

MavCoat ships in the color the customer picked.

    This

Every MavCoat ships clear. Color is added on site with MavTints at the mix station.

  • Not this

SLE will be fine in that forklift aisle on its own.

    This

Under heavy forklift traffic SLE must be topcoated with a MavSeal aliphatic — HWU, UHD, HSU, or HTU depending on the wear and slip driver.

  • Not this

WBE is low-VOC, so it is the safe pick everywhere.

    This

WBE is the occupied-building pick, not a chemical-resistance product. Concentrated acid service is CRE.

Takeaways

  • MavCoat is the epoxy coating line. It is not the whole system — on nearly every job it goes over a MavClad or MavCrete floor.
  • Every MavCoat ships clear. Color happens at the mix station with MavTints — never at the factory.
  • MavCoat FC is a broadcast body coat. It is engineered to be buried in aggregate and can never be the exposed finish.
  • Aggressive chemical service is CRE or NV. The HPE sheet says hard, durable and chemical resistant — and tells you to confirm performance in the specific chemical environment before use.
