Polyaspartics and urethane topcoats
The topcoat is the last hour of the job and the only layer the customer ever sees. UPA, RCU, HTU, HWU, UHD, and ESD each carry their own hard limits — speed, thickness, humidity, and technique.
- Pick the right cure speed for the temperature and the crew
- Respect the thin-coat limits — thicker is worse on every urethane topcoat
- Run the product-specific techniques: dip-and-roll, cross-roll, tint rules, grounding
MavSeal UPA (polyaspartic) — the numbers, from the UPA PDS
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Mix ratio | 1:1 by volume — full kits only, mixed 3 minutes until uniform |
| Working time @72°F, 20% RH | XTRA Slow 2 hr · Slow 70 min · Medium 32 min · Fast 25 min |
| Working time @72°F, 80% RH | XTRA Slow 70 min · Slow 28 min · Medium 17 min · Fast 14 min |
| Thickness / coverage | 10–16 mils · 100–160 sq ft/gal (second coat 6–8 mils, max 200 sq ft/gal) |
| Tie-ins | Do not exceed 5–10 minutes from one mix to the next; joints as breaks |
| Second coat | As soon as the first is tack free |
| Temperature | Air/surface 35–85°F, material 60–85°F — below 60°F use Fast Cure, no exceptions |
| Moisture in the air | Speeds the cure — humid days shorten everything |
| Where it goes | Over full broadcast (chip, quartz, sand) only — not on smooth floors |
MavSeal RCU (rapid-cure polyaspartic) — from the RCU PDS
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Pot life | 13 minutes — everything staged, crew in position before mixing |
| Spread | Within 2 minutes of mixing; back-roll before it tacks (5–7 minutes) |
| Thickness | 8–16 mils (100–200 sq ft/gal); self-leveling at 16 mils |
| Recoat window | 2–6 hours |
| Return to service | Foot traffic 3 hours, full service 24 hours |
| Conditions | No direct sun, surface under 95°F, RH 80% max, 5°F above dew point |
| Kits | Never split, never partial |
| Shelf life | 6 months — Part A is moisture-sensitive, reseal immediately |
The urethane finish coats — HTU, HWU, UHD, ESD
| Product | Critical requirements from its PDS |
|---|---|
| MavSeal HTU (satin, wear filler) | Mix ORDER: Wear Filler into Part B, then Part A; 5-min induction. 3–4 mils max — heavier coats blister. 375–500 sq ft/gal. Pot life 60 min. Ambient RH must be 30–70% (moisture-cure — never above 80% or below 25%). Substrate 55–90°F. Recoat 8–24 hr. Isocyanates: respirator and ventilation. |
| MavSeal HWU (satin topcoat) | Mix Part B + tint, then Part C filler, then Part A — one kit at a time. 2–3 mils at 600 sq ft/gal; thicker means bubbles, soft film, gloss variation. Keep filler agitated in the pan. Back-roll perpendicular in a V pattern; a finish roller follows no more than 20 minutes behind. Never roll tacky material. Not over a dark primer in the neutral version. |
| MavSeal UHD (high-traffic urethane) | Dip-and-roll ONLY — the sheet says do not squeegee. 3–4 mils max at ~450 sq ft/gal — it foams thicker. Stir the pan every dip so filler stays suspended. Cross-roll immediately at 90°. Pot life 60 min. Ambient 50–85°F. Over a primer or epoxy system only, never bare concrete. Topcoat epoxy within 24 hours or sand and solvent-wipe. No vehicles for 36 hours. |
| MavCoat ESD (static-dissipative) | Mixed BY WEIGHT: 1.08 lb A + 6.45 lb B + 3.0 lb C + 1 pint MavTints (never white). 2–3 mils at 600 sq ft/gal — thickness IS the electrical rating; thicker or pooled material can fail the ohm spec. All three temps 60–85°F. Copper grounding tape per the sheet, roughly every 1,000 sq ft. One kit at a time. |
- Not this
It's 55° in the plant — Slow Cure is fine if we hustle.
ThisBelow 60°F the sheet orders Fast Cure. Hustle does not change chemistry.
- Not this
Roll the UHD a little heavy so we're done in one coat.
ThisPast 4 mils it foams. Two thin coats per the sheet beat one ruined thick one.
Takeaways
- Below 60°F, polyaspartic means Fast Cure — the UPA and SLE sheets both order it.
- MavSeal UPA goes over full broadcast systems only — never as the topcoat of a smooth floor.
- On urethane topcoats the extra mil is the enemy: HTU and UHD blister or foam past 3–4 mils, ESD loses its electrical rating.
